Digital Sovereignty at home

While a lot of companies (especially in Europe) are looking into digital sovereignty, to become less dependent on US companies, there is also a trend with individual people that have had it with the enshittification of a lot of platforms, and are looking for smaller, local companies that are not add-driven. This are my personal steps so far:

Email from Gmail to Proton

Music from Spotify to Qobuz

Whatsapp - partly moved to Signal

Website form Wordpress to Micro.blog

Storage, still partly iCloud, but more personal stuff on Proton Drive

Socials Mastodon, Bluesky, Pixelfed (no more Twitter & Facebook, but still on Instagram)

Ereader: from Kindle to Kobo (which better allows sideloading and buying directly from authors)

Search from google to Kagi

AI from ChatGPT & Claude to Le Chat

Podcasts from Spotify & Apple to Casto

Biggest challenges are Instagram (everyone is on it…) & Youtube (no real alternative) And WeChat is also still in use..

To be continued…..
